Our “New” Family Room

Hey all! I am so excited to share our family room! I painted this room when we first moved in almost 10 years ago and have not touched it since. We desperately wanted to remove the carpet and add laminate flooring for the last couple of years but we’ve just never had enough funding. Besides, you know me, I can’t do one thing in a room without completely changing everything else.

Here is a before picture:(In my defense, this is an old picture)

Here is the after:

I know, right? I am just beyond the moon with how the transformation came together. Let’s break it down: the paint is the same I am using throughout, Pebble Gray from Glidden. The baseboards are also the same we used in the Formal, Craftsman. I opted to remove the curtains and add window blinds instead. I believe it has really opened up the room and made it feel larger. We used the same laminate flooring as the Formal as well.

Now the crown jewel for the room, that built in bookcase..

We totally cheated by using IKEA Billy bookcases! There are, thankfully, a lot of posts and Pins about how others have done the same and I read all of them, ( ok maybe not all but a lot). My wonderful hubby and Ellie did all the work. We used 4 bookcases as our wall was 15′ long and we left room for our flat screen TV.. We will also need to buy or build a console table… That will be in the future as the budget allows. But for now, we are loving the progress so far.

The bookcases come with bolts to secure them to the wall. We added one long piece of crown molding to give it the look of one piece as well as hide the ugly bolts. My hubby added a piece of MDF to secure the molding between bookcase 2 and 3. We nailed lattice molding to cover the space between the bookcases. We also had to raise them to accommodate the height of baseboards. I wish I would have taken more step-by-step pictures but I didn’t think about it at the moment…

Now as far as styling, I don’t think I will ever be satisfied. All the items I “shopped” in my home. I didn’t realize I had so many but my girls were not at all surprised….:~)

Sorry for the lack of instructions but please let me know if you have any questions. I will be more than happy to answer them.

Until next time,

Spring Wreath

I am so excited that spring is right around the corner! The gloomy weather is starting to weigh me down and I’m itching to add some color to the outside of my home. I can almost smell the scent of freshly cut lawn…..as the snow falls gracefully outside my window. Patience is a virtue I do NOT have!

The month of March in our home is super busy as 4 out of the 7 members of the family celebrate birthdays. We are so cake and ice creamed out by the time the April birthday arrives. In light of this insanity, I figured I’d better squeeze out a small and simple project. I found this idea on Pinterest, (I know of all places). Here is the link to the original post.

Supplies (All purchased at Hobby Lobby on sale):

 Paper Umbrella

Flowers, branches (various sizes and colors)

There really is not much to it. I began with the taller branches towards the back and added the shorter flowers in the front. I also added a pinwheel and butterfly. You gather the umbrella super tight and then add a bow with a ribbon.

And there you have it folks! Super easy and cute! The original post was used for a baby shower and it is so sweet. The variations are endless. Have fun and please share your pics with me. I’d love to see them!

Thanks for stopping by,

Formal Living Room Updated

Hey all! We have been busy around these parts updating our home. After all, in June we will celebrate our 10th year living here. It is looking a little worn and tired. You might remember we started in the extra room downstairs, (here), and painted the whole downstairs (kitchen) in the Pebble Gray from Glidden.

We were finally able to move into step 2 by adding laminate flooring in the formal and family room! What a difference!

Here are some Before pics of the space:

And now, the AFTER pics:

We also added the larger craftsman style baseboards. Here’s a closer look

We are in love with the look it gave the overall room. You might have noticed that the coffee table also had a little touch up. I painted it white and once the weather warms up, I’m going to stain the top a darker color.

The rug is from Target and the family pictures were ordered through Canvas On Demand. The middle one I found at Hobby Lobby.

The only items that remained un-touched were the curtains. We are working on the family room as we speak and I can’t wait to show you the final product. I have been wanting to make some serious changes to this room and I’m so thrilled they are coming together. Here is one last look:

Thanks again for joining me! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Christmas Home Tour

Just a few short days until Christmas 2014 rolls around! I don’t know about you, but I’m guessing if you have any school age children, this week is super busy with concerts and recitals. I am off to the first of three this week (two on the same day, of course).  Here is a quick tour of the fun Christmas décor we have around the house.

First up is the kitchen. The first centerpiece is on our table and the second is on our island.

I added some figurines and more ornaments to the other side off the sink.

We have our Christmas tree in the entryway with lighted garland on the banisters.

Here’s a closer look at the chandelier. I was really excited to add some garland and hang large ornaments from it. I really love how it turned out.

A simple arrangement on the coffee table in the living room.

I added a small tree in the half bath downstairs.

We are in the middle of a huge transformation and much needed upgrade in our family room. Therefore there is only this little table decorated. The rest of the room is bare except for the TV and sectional. So excited to finish this room.

And for our finale, the outside of our home.  Can you spot Santa? It looks like a California winter due to hardly any snow so far. Normally, our front lawn would have at least 3″ of snow.

Thank you for joining me on this tour and I truly hope you have an amazing holiday season with family and friends!

Until next time,

Kiwi Crate

Now that the cool Fall weather is upon us, comes the big challenge to keep a five year old engaged when she cannot go outside and doesn’t want to play with her toys. I was stumped until I read about a great company called Kiwi Crate. They send out a box monthly with entertaining and learning activities. Each box is filled with activities based on a specific theme. For example, this month’s box was about Dinosaurs. The day the kit arrived, she had her bestie, Ella, over to play.

Some of the activities were a dinosaur visor, dinosaur “feet”, clay to form fossils, make your own dinosaur skeletons, etc. They had so much fun! There are way more things to do with each kit. The cool thing is that the boxes can be used to store the activities afterwards!

Right now, you receive $10 off your first kit if you want to check it out. You can cancel at any time. Just click on this link to receive your discount and order your kit. They offer a wonderful referral program where your friends receive $10 off their first kit and you also receive a $10 credit. Not bad!

Let me know if you decide to test it out and how you like it!

Until next time,

Wide Eyed Turkey Cupcakes

Here is another cute project I found and  it’s called a wide-eyed turkey. I grabbed this one on Bitz & Giggles’ website and Ellie begged me to make them. How could I resist.

Those wide big eyes remind me of my grandbaby! Once again, super easy to make and Ellie really enjoyed creating her own.
Gather your materials:
 * Cupcakes (homemade or bought)
*Chocolate Frosting
 *Fudge striped cookie (Dollar store)
 *Oreo Cookies (Dollar Store)
*Brown M&M’s or chocolate chips (Dollar Store)
*Red Licorice (Dollar Store)
*Candy Corn (leftover from Halloween)
Now to the fun part, putting it all together:
Carefully pull the Oreos apart keeping the sides with the crème filling and eating the other. Add the brown M&M’s to make the eyes. You can enforce them with frosting but Ellie said they were holding just fine.
 Frost your cupcake:

Add frosting to the top half of the fudge striped cookie.

Arrange the candy corn as the feathers.

Cut a slit into the cupcake just large enough to slide the cookie in.

Add your eyes, candy corn beak and licorice to finish it off.

Look at how sweet they look in a grouping! We ran out of brown so Ellie used the blue M&M’s!

Thank you for hanging in as I know this is a long post! I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving with loved ones. Be sure to let me know if you try any of these projects. I would love to see them.
Until next time,

Thanksgiving Pilgrim Hat

Hey all! Happy Sunday, just a few days from the official start of Holiday fun! We will be hosting Thanksgiving dinner at our home this year.  I was in search of cute little crafts to entertain the kiddos. I found this fun idea on Lil Luna and thought it would be perfect. They are little Pilgrim hat crayon holders.

Here are the items you need to complete your own:
  • Black paper cups ( I bought mine at Hobby Lobby)
  • Black cardstock
  • Ribbon, ric rac
  • Hot glue gun w/ glue sticks
  • Button
  • Small paper square
Step 1: Trace your circle on black cardstock
Step 2: Cut out the bottom of the cup
Step 3: Hot glue your ribbon and/or ric rac.  Then hot glue the cup to the circle.
So fun and easy! Ellie wanted to make her own and here she is showing it off. Of course, I did all the dangerous steps for her (i.e. knife, glue gun, etc.).
Here is another shot of mine. I was also thinking that you can add other fun items such as popcorn, peanuts, candy, chocolate covered pretzels, etc. You will need to add shredded paper in the cup to elevate the crayons. Fun, easy, and inexpensive. All you need to add are the coloring pages and your all set.
Thank you for hanging in as I know this is a long post! I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving with loved ones. Be sure to let me know if you try this. I would love to see them.
Until next time,
